Phil Lefkow

Phil Lefkow is a classmate of Andy Barbour in the Japanese language course at their school. He appears in the narrative only indirectly, through a text message he sends to Theo Decker using Andy's cell phone. The message, which reads "Hi Theo, Andy here, are you ok?" arrives while Theo is at Hobie's house, shortly after Theo has told Hobie about the ring Welty Blackwell gave him. The text startles Hobie, who is unaccustomed to electronic interruptions, and prompts Theo to hastily switch off the phone and apologize. The incident underscores the tension of Theo's secretive errand and the awkwardness of his re-entry into a world of normal teenage communication after the trauma of the museum bombing. Phil Lefkow himself has no further role in the story; his name appears only in this single, fleeting moment of misdirected contact.
